Where to Stay in North Goa: A Beach-by-Beach Guide

North Goa is easier to choose when you stop treating it as one nightlife brand. On BeachHutsInGoa the mapped coast has two different jobs: Pernem, where open sand and cottage stays still show up in destination notes, and Bardez, where markets, cliffs, and a built-up hotel strip are the story.

Pernem: space, dunes and sand-side stays

This is the North Goa many travelers mean when they want a beach cottage without sleeping next to the busiest Bardez road.

Morjim

Morjim is a broad Pernem beach with shacks, sea-view rooms and more space than Baga or Calangute in BeachHutsInGoa’s notes. It sits toward the Chapora river mouth. Olive ridley turtles nest here in season; follow marked guidance. Use Morjim if you want a mixed North Goa shore that is still north of the central strip.

Ashwem

Ashwem links Mandrem and Morjim on the same continuous sand. Destination notes mention shacks and sea-facing stays along the dunes. It is easy to treat as a leftover name. On the ground it is the middle of the three-beach question. Confirm how close a stay sits to the shack line.

Mandrem

Mandrem is the palm-backed, slower-feeling stretch in BeachHutsInGoa’s copy: boutique cottages, a village setting quieter than Baga–Calangute, and a landscape of dunes and river. It often appeals to longer stays and couples as a pattern, not as a rule. Facilities are described as boutique rather than big-resort.

Arambol

Arambol sits near the northern end of Goa’s mapped coast. The main beach is used by swimmers, walkers and longer-stay visitors; the northern cliffs and lake feel more secluded in destination notes. Bardez: cliffs, markets and the built-up strip

Vagator

Vagator is a cliff-backed beach beside Anjuna, with red laterite and coves rather than a long flat bay. Chapora Fort sits above the northern side. Stays tend to be guesthouses and boutique rooms. Nightlife is more prominent here than in South Goa, according to destination notes.

Anjuna

Anjuna is rocky coves and a well-known Wednesday market, with guesthouses behind the shore. It is livelier than Mandrem or Agonda. Use Anjuna if you want restaurants, a social scene and beach time together — and look at Pernem if you wanted the opposite.

Baga

Baga is part of the central Bardez strip: a busy beachfront road, shacks, and the Baga river at one end. BeachHutsInGoa lists it so the map is complete, even where classic hut stays are less common. Choose it for a livelier, more built-up beach — not as a quiet-hut default.

Calangute

Calangute is the central beach of that tourist belt, between Baga and Candolim. Hotels, shops and a long public shoreline define it. Traditional thatched huts are less typical here than in South Goa or Pernem. The destination page exists for comparison.

Candolim

Candolim continues the sand south from Calangute toward Sinquerim. It is still developed, with a slightly quieter front than Baga in destination notes, and easier hotel inventory than hut-style stays.

How to choose a North Goa starting beach

If you want sand-side cottages and more open shore, start with Mandrem, Ashwem or Morjim, and use the three-beach comparison. Add Arambol if you want a more social village lane at the northern end.

If you want cliffs, markets and evening options, start with Anjuna or Vagator, and be clear that this is a different stay format from a South Goa hut.

If you want maximum convenience and a built-up beach, Calangute, Baga or Candolim are the honest match — and Canacona or Pernem remain the better look for hut-style discovery.
